NetZero is a free ISP provided nationwide in the United States of America. It utilizes a small Java-based program to connect its users. It uses the windows dialup to connect a user to the web, and verifies account information through the JS program. It runs relatively well for me. I get up to 33600 bps. Due to use in my area it may become slower than desireable, but for a free connection, that can be overlooked. The idea here is that through the display of a small moveable banner, advertisements can be shown to the users (much like television or radio ads). These ads pay for the cost of the network. Along with free connection, users get a free e-mail account (yourname@netzero.net). This POP3 mail account allows users to use Microsoft Outlook, Netscape Messenger, or any other third party program to receive and send mail from their own computers. When signing up, users are required to fill out a survey so that the ads may be better tailored to the users' individual preferences. There can be multiple users per computer. When connecting to NetZero, your default browser opens the NetZero home page. Overall, it is a good service, though the ads can be in the way sometimes.
There is a crack for NetZero. It solves the problem of having a banner displaying ads. When NetZero is run, the banner does not come up, nor does the default browser open. Everything works just fine without those two annoying bits occurring. One problem is that after awhile the program opens every time as if it is the first time it has been run, but that only means that two extra buttons must be pushed each time. If name and password are saved, It takes only three clicks of the mouse to connect.
This crack fixes NetZero version 1.
